What Is Freelancing? A Simple Explanation for Beginners

What Is Freelancing — blog banner

Have you ever wondered what freelancing really means?

Many people think freelancing is just another type of job. Others think it is simply working online. But freelancing is much deeper than that.

The simplest definition I can give is this:

A freelancer is someone who finds solutions to problems.

That is the foundation of freelancing. When a client comes to you, they are usually facing a challenge. Your role as a freelancer is to understand that problem, conduct research, learn what is needed, and provide a solution. Once you understand how to solve the problem, you then place a value on your time, effort, and skills.

If the client agrees with your proposal, you complete the work and get paid.

Freelancing Is Not Employment

One important thing I always tell people is this: freelancing is not employment. As a freelancer, you are not simply working for someone else. You are operating like a business. In other words, you are the company.

This means you are responsible for everything connected to your work:

  • Marketing yourself
  • Communicating with clients
  • Managing finances
  • Building trust
  • Delivering quality services
  • Handling customer support
  • Growing your brand

That is why personal branding is extremely important in freelancing. People must trust you before they can confidently give you work.

Skills Matter More Than Certificates

Freelancing is heavily skill-based. Clients are not mainly paying for certificates or qualifications. They are paying for results. They want solutions to their problems.

This means one of the greatest strengths a freelancer can have is the willingness to learn. Sometimes a client may present you with a task you have never done before. That does not automatically mean you should reject it. Instead, conduct research:

  • Watch YouTube tutorials
  • Read articles and guides
  • Practice
  • Consult experienced people
  • Learn the process step by step

Research is one of the most powerful tools a freelancer can have. In fact, many skills are learned while solving real-world problems.

Honesty Builds Your Brand

At the same time, honesty is very important. If you research a task and realize you still cannot complete it properly, it is better to tell the client the truth instead of accepting work you cannot deliver.

Many freelancers destroy their reputation early because they promise things they cannot do. Once a client loses trust in you, they may never return, and they may also discourage others from working with you.

When you deliver quality work:

  • Clients become satisfied
  • They recommend you to others
  • Your name starts spreading naturally
  • More opportunities begin to come your way

My Personal Freelancing Experience

Some of the skills I have today were learned through freelancing itself. For example, I once had a client who needed a Java application developed. At that time, I did not know coding or the software required to build the application. Instead of giving up, I started researching using YouTube, Google, and online tutorials. Through research and practice, I managed to complete the application successfully.

Another time, someone wanted help registering a company in Zambia. I had never done it before. I researched the process, learned the requirements, understood the forms involved, and eventually completed the registration successfully. Today, I have helped register many companies because I was willing to learn when the opportunity first came.

That is the true spirit of freelancing:

  1. A problem is presented
  2. Research is conducted
  3. A solution is developed
  4. The work is delivered
  5. Payment is received

What Do You Need to Start Freelancing?

Starting freelancing does not require a huge investment. In most cases, you only need:

  • A laptop
  • Reliable internet connection
  • Willingness to learn
  • Consistency
  • Online presence

Your online presence matters because people want to trust the person they are dealing with. Keep your profiles professional and visible. Trust is one of the biggest currencies in freelancing.

Final Thoughts

Freelancing is a journey that takes time to build. It is not instant success, and it is not simply "online work." It is a process of learning, solving problems, building trust, and continuously improving yourself.

Start with the skills you already have. Learn new ones along the way. Deliver quality work consistently.

Over time, your reputation will begin to market your services for you. And that is what freelancing is truly about.

Bridging the Gap: How to Turn Your Practical Care Experience into Strong Assignments

Joshua Bwalo Sakala

Lead Researcher · Assessor · IQA  ·  July 2026  ·  7 min read
Support worker sitting with a young person, helping with schoolwork at the kitchen table in a residential children's home

If you are a support worker or a manager in a residential children's home, you already possess a wealth of expertise that cannot be taught in a classroom. You know what it means to create a “home from home”, whether that's sitting in your pyjamas with the kids at night or sticking by them through intense periods of conflict.

However, we understand that for many Health and Social Care learners, there is a significant gap between being a great practitioner and writing like a great academic. You have the practical understanding, but the time and confidence needed to research, structure, and write it up into a Level 3 or Level 5 portfolio can feel overwhelming.

At SBJ Freelance Solutions, our mission is to “Teach You How” to bridge that gap. Here is how you can start turning your daily shifts into high-scoring evidence.

1. Your Daily Routine IS Your Evidence

Learners often think they need “extraordinary” events to write an assignment. In reality, the Quality Standards that govern children's homes focus on the small, domestic details of care.

  • The Quality and Purpose of Care Standard: when you support a child to make their tea or choose their school activities, you are providing personalised care that takes account of their background.
  • The Positive Relationships Standard: when you de-escalate a confrontation or help a child resolve a conflict positively, you are meeting a core academic requirement for your diploma.

The SBJ Tip: don't just “describe” what you did. We coach you on how to analyse why your actions met the home's Statement of Purpose and improved the child's outcomes.

2. Mastering “Command Verbs”

One of the biggest reasons assignments are referred by assessors is a failure to meet the command verb. If your brief asks you to “evaluate” a practice but you only “describe” it, you haven't met the criteria.

As part of our Assignment Coaching, we break down these verbs so you understand exactly what the assessor wants to see. We help you move from simply stating facts to providing a critical analysis of your role within the wider multi-agency system, such as working with therapists, social workers, or the “Family Help” teams introduced in the 2026 statutory guidance.

3. Turning Difficult Moments into Reflection

Working in residential care is relationally demanding. You might face incidents where children direct anger toward you, or where progress feels like it is moving backwards.

Academic assignments require you to use reflective practice models like Gibbs, Driscoll, or Kolb to process these events. Reflective practice isn't just about what went wrong; it's a tool for resilience and professional development. We coach you through these models, teaching you how to use your most difficult shifts as evidence of your growth as a practitioner.

4. Aligning with the 2026 Landscape

The sector is changing rapidly in 2026, with the number of registered children's homes in England growing by 15% over the past year alone. Ofsted has confirmed it will remove the single headline “overall effectiveness” judgement for local authority children's services inspections from April 2026, and the government has published updated “Working Together to Safeguard Children 2026” statutory guidance, including the new Family Help model. Prime Minister Andy Burnham has also signalled a push toward a National Care Service integrated with the NHS.

Our tutors are qualified Assessors and IQAs who continuously monitor these changes in legislation and CQC/Ofsted guidance, so your portfolio references the current regulatory environment rather than outdated standards.

5. Integrity Matters: We Coach You, We Don't Write For You

SBJ Freelance Solutions strictly follows academic integrity standards. We do not provide contract cheating services or write assignments for you. Instead, we provide structured feedback on your own drafts and guidance on how to structure your answer based on your unique practice.

Our goal is to give you the tools so that you eventually won't need us anymore — walking away not just with a certificate, but with the writing and analytical skills needed to progress into senior management.

By booking a service, submitting a brief, or otherwise engaging us, you agree to these Terms.

1. Our Services

Zambia: business registration (PACRA, ZRA, ZPPA), eBay import and delivery, and virtual assistant support.

United Kingdom: one-to-one tutoring and coaching for Health and Social Care qualifications, and CV writing.

Worldwide: branding, website development, Google Advertising and digital marketing, quality and compliance documentation, data entry, and academic consultancy (research assistance, brief breakdowns, and proofreading feedback on your own draft).

2. Eligibility

You must be at least 18 years old, or have the permission of a parent or legal guardian, to book a service with us.

3. UK Tutoring and Coaching — What We Do and Do Not Provide

This section applies specifically to our Health and Social Care tutoring and coaching service in the United Kingdom, and it is important.

We provide tutoring, coaching, and structured feedback only. We do not write, complete, or otherwise produce content that is intended to be submitted by a client as their own assessed work. All coursework, assignments, essays, reflective accounts, case studies, and portfolio evidence submitted to an awarding body or institution must be written by the client, in their own words, based on their own practice and understanding.

Clients are solely responsible for ensuring that anything they submit complies with the academic integrity policies of their institution, awarding body, and employer, and with the law of the country in which they are studying — including the Skills and Post-16 Education Act 2022, which makes it a criminal offence in England to provide or arrange contract cheating services for students on post-16 qualifications.

We reserve the right to refuse, pause, or terminate any booking where we reasonably believe a client is seeking a finished, submission-ready document rather than coaching and feedback. If you are unsure whether a request falls within this policy, ask us before booking.

4. Booking a Service

You can book a service by WhatsApp, email, or the contact form on our website. We will ask for enough information to understand what you need — for example, your brief, qualification, awarding body, and deadline for UK tutoring bookings, or your product and delivery details for eBay imports.

5. Payment Terms

Zambia business registration services start from K600, payable as agreed at booking. eBay imports require a 50% deposit to place an order, with the balance due on arrival before delivery. UK tutoring and coaching is paid after your coaching and feedback package is delivered and you are satisfied — no upfront fee for standard bookings. Branding, website development, virtual assistance, digital marketing, and data entry are invoiced according to an agreed quote or memorandum of understanding.

All prices are quoted in the currency stated at the time of booking, typically Zambian Kwacha for Zambia-based services or British Pounds for UK tutoring, unless otherwise agreed.

6. Cancellations and Refunds

UK consumers: under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013, if you book a service with us online or at a distance, you generally have the right to cancel within 14 days of booking, without giving a reason, and to receive a refund of anything you have paid. If you expressly ask us to begin providing the service within that 14-day period, and we fully complete it within that time, your cancellation right ends once the service is fully performed. If only partly performed, you will owe payment for the proportion already provided. Because our standard UK tutoring model only takes payment after your package is complete, this mainly affects situations where a deposit has been paid in advance.

For eBay imports, deposits are used to place your order with the overseas seller and are generally non-refundable once the order has been placed, because we incur that cost immediately.

7. Client Responsibilities

Provide accurate and complete information for your brief or order. For UK tutoring, write and submit your own work, and check it against your institution's requirements before submission. Make payment on the agreed terms, and treat our team professionally and respectfully.

8. Intellectual Property

For branding and website development work, ownership of the final agreed deliverables transfers to you once you have paid in full, unless we agree otherwise in writing.

Any coaching materials, study guides, or model/example content we provide as part of tutoring remain our intellectual property, provided for your personal study reference only. They must not be redistributed, resold, or submitted as your own work.

9. Confidentiality

We keep your personal details, brief, and any information about your business, institution, or employer confidential, and use it only to deliver the service you have requested. See our Privacy Policy for full details.

10. Limitation of Liability

We provide our services with reasonable skill and care, but we do not guarantee specific outcomes such as grades, qualification results, admission decisions, or import delivery dates that depend on third parties. To the maximum extent permitted by law, our total liability to you for any claim arising from a service is limited to the amount you paid for that service. Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits any liability that cannot lawfully be excluded, including liability that UK consumer law does not allow us to exclude under the Consumer Rights Act 2015.

11. Governing Law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the Republic of Zambia. If you are a consumer resident in the United Kingdom, this does not remove the protection of any mandatory UK consumer law provisions that cannot be excluded by agreement.

12. Changes to These Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. The current version will always be available on this page, with the date it was last updated shown above. Continuing to use our services after a change means you accept the updated Terms.
